In the aftermath of Hurricane Ian and amid the daily challenges of recovery and rebuilding, FISH of Sanibel-Captiva (FISH) has continued to offer vital mental health support through individual counseling sessions, providing islanders with coping mechanisms that are helping them manage post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and everyday stresses. These one-on-one sessions, made possible in partnership with SalusCare, have proven to be a lifeline for many residents who are still processing the emotional impact of the storm and seeking help for ongoing personal challenges.
One client, who prefers to remain anonymous, shared how much the mental health services have meant to them:
“I like the convenience of being able to stay on the island and get mental health care, because there are no other options available. I have been using the service since the beginning, and I feel it has helped me tremendously. I have PTSD from Hurricane Ian, and every time there is a storm advisory I would panic. Laura has taught me coping skills to help me during times of distress. FISH has been instrumental for me to continue living on the island. I feel supported and will continue to heal with the help of FISH.”
FISH’s collaboration with SalusCare, made available in part through funding provided by Sanibel-Captiva Rotary, allows the organization to provide accessible mental health resources directly on the islands, eliminating the need for long commutes and offering much-needed care in a familiar setting. Through these services, individuals have found ways to navigate the overwhelming stress associated with the storm’s aftermath, as well as coping strategies for the everyday pressures that continue to affect island residents.
“Our goal is to ensure that no one feels alone in their struggles,” said Maria Espinoza, Executive Director of FISH. “We are deeply committed to supporting the mental well-being of our community, particularly after such a traumatic event as Hurricane Ian. Our partnership with SalusCare allows us to provide essential services that make a huge difference in people’s lives.”
Since the launch of these individual mental health sessions, FISH has seen a significant positive impact on those seeking assistance. The program offers flexibility and is designed to meet the unique needs of each individual, whether they are experiencing storm-related PTSD or everyday life stresses.
As the community continues to rebuild, FISH remains persistent in its mission to serve and support the residents and workforce of Sanibel and Captiva, providing resources to help them live healthy, supported, and empowered lives.
