FISH OF SANCAP Provides Comprehensive Support for Those Facing Crisis Situations

FISH OF SANCAP (FISH) continues to provide hope for individuals and families in crisis, offering a wide range of services designed to meet the needs of those experiencing unexpected hardships. Whether it’s the sudden loss of employment, the aftermath of a natural disaster, or the need for a career change, FISH is there to provide critical support.

For many who have found themselves facing a turning point, FISH has been a lifeline, helping them navigate difficult times with dignity and hope. One client, whose name has been changed to “Sarah” to protect her identity, shared her journey with FISH:

“I’m a single mom with a 12-year-old son who’s been working as a server on the islands my entire adult life. My journey with FISH began with the devastating Island Cow fire. You never think your job and source of income could vanish overnight, but it did. I wasn’t ready for it.

I quickly found a new job on the island to replace the one I lost, but it was not opening for a month, pushing back my start date. I chose to wait. Then, we were hit by Hurricane Ian. Even though my apartment didn’t suffer very much damage, my career as a server on Sanibel and Captiva was completely wiped out.”

Hurricane Ian severely disrupted the restaurant industry in Sanibel, with many restaurants left damaged or destroyed, significantly affecting the local economy.

Sarah continues, “After Ian, I found myself without a job, again. I had no one to turn to and no backup income, so I was truly grateful for FISH’s support. Since the hurricane, I’ve started six jobs, but none of them offered enough business to support a decent living. I’ve tried and struggled for two years.”

FISH notes that although some restaurants have since reopened, the slow tourist season has led to a decline in visitors and an increase in those seeking assistance from FISH programs. Islanders remain hopeful that business will rebound as the community prepares for the holidays and the 2025 tourist season.

“I was reduced to working just one day a week at a restaurant, if I was put on the schedule at all,” continues Sarah. “I was referred to FISH who has been there to give me a hand up, helping me keep moving forward, by covering some of my rent and utilities. I’ve also used the food pantry, which is a much needed, loved, and appreciated resource that Sanibel is truly fortunate to have.”

Sarah’s story is just one example of how FISH’s wrap-around services have made a significant impact on the lives of those in crisis. The organization not only addresses immediate needs like rent and food assistance but also helps clients build a more stable future through educational and job training scholarships.

“We understand that life can change in an instant, and we are here to help our community members through those difficult times,” said Maria Espinoza, Executive Director of FISH. “Whether it’s providing emergency assistance, connecting individuals to job opportunities, or offering food assistance, our goal is to empower our clients to overcome challenges and thrive.”
