FISH Medical Equipment Loan Program Helps Community Members

Getting around after surgery, managing chronic health conditions, or caring for an aging loved one can be tough—especially without the right equipment.

Through the FISH OF SANCAP Medical Equipment Loan Program, FISH helps bridge a gap for community members in need of temporary medical equipment. Whether someone needs a walker after a hospital stay or a shower chair to stay safe while bathing, FISH is making sure no one has to go without the support they need.

“While seniors are the most frequent users of our medical equipment loan program, it’s available to anyone in need,” says Erika Arnowitz, Senior Services Director at FISH. “Whether it’s a parent recovering from surgery, a visitor with a temporary injury, or someone caring for a loved one at home—having access to equipment like walkers or shower chairs can make all the difference. And there’s absolutely no cost. We want people to know this support exists, and it’s just a phone call away.”

The need has only grown in recent years. With many island residents aging in place, and others dealing with long-term effects from recent hurricanes or ongoing health issues, having access to medical equipment—even just for a few weeks—can be life-changing.

FISH’s medical equipment inventory includes:

  • Wheelchairs, including transport chairs;
  • Walkers (non-wheeled, with wheels, with wheels and seat);
  • Canes (several versions);
  • Crutches (adjustable);
  • Bath Bench and Bath Transfer Bench;
  • Shower Chair;
  • Commodes;
  • Knee Scooters

“I recently borrowed a wheelchair from FISH, and I can’t begin to express how helpful it has been,” shared one client. “Having access to this equipment has made life so much easier. It’s comforting to know there’s a place I can turn to when I need help.”

Borrowing the equipment is simple. Anyone in need—whether a resident, worker, or visitor on Sanibel or Captiva—can call the FISH 24-hour answering service at (239) 472-0404. A trained volunteer will return the call, confirm availability, and arrange a time for pickup or delivery.

“Sometimes people just need a walker for a couple of weeks during recovery. Other times, a caregiver needs a shower bench to make life safer for their loved one,” says Arnowitz. “We’re here to help meet everyday needs.”

All equipment is loaned at no cost, made possible through community donations and the dedication of FISH volunteers. “If you have gently used medical equipment you no longer need, FISH welcomes inquiries about potential donations. While we can’t accept everything due to safety and storage limitations, we’re happy to check if your item can be put to good use,” says Arnowitz.
