Every November, FISH of SanCap joins the nation in recognizing National Family Caregivers Month — a time to recognize those who provide care and support to loved ones, often around the clock.
Family caregivers help older adults and people with disabilities manage daily routines, medical needs, and emotional well-being. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), across the U.S., more than 53 million people care for a family member or friend — often unpaid — providing an estimated $470 billion in support each year.[i]
“Caregiving can be both rewarding and exhausting,” said Erika Arnowitz, Senior Services Director at FISH. “Many family members are balancing jobs, children, and their own health while caring for someone they love. At FISH, we remind caregivers they don’t have to do it alone. We can connect them with resources, respite support, and a list of qualified home health professionals who can step in when they need a break.”
FISH understands that caring for an older adult takes patience, planning, and a lot of heart. Whether it’s arranging transportation, delivering meals, or checking in by phone, the organization works to ease the load for both seniors and their caregivers.
“Supporting older adults in our community also means supporting the family members who care for them,” said Maria Espinoza, Executive Director of FISH. “These caregivers give so much of themselves every day, and it’s important that they know help is here when they need it.”
According to NCOA, National Family Caregivers Month—first recognized in 1994—is meant to honor the dedication and love caregivers show every day, while reminding them that caring for themselves is just as important as caring for others. For additional information, visit ncoa.org.
