As the community gears up for the holiday season and FISH of SanCap’s Adopt-A-Family and toy drive continues, the organization is reminding donors to keep toy safety top of mind.
December is recognized nationally as Safe Toys and Gifts Month—a reminder that thoughtful, safe choices help ensure children enjoy a joyful and injury-free holiday.
With nearly 150 island families hoping to be adopted this year, FISH is grateful for the incredible generosity shown by neighbors, local businesses, and all who give from the heart. As donors shop for items, keeping a few simple safety guidelines in mind can make a real difference.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), thousands of children are treated in emergency departments each year for toy-related injuries, many of which could be prevented with age-appropriate selections and proper supervision. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also emphasizes choosing toys made from non-toxic materials, avoiding small parts that pose choking hazards, and ensuring items meet current safety standards and certifications.[i] FISH encourages donors to consider the following when selecting gifts:
- Choose toys labeled for the child’s appropriate age group
- Avoid small, detachable pieces for young children
- Look for “ASTM” safety certification on packaging
- Select non-toxic, well-constructed materials
- Be mindful of items requiring protective gear
“These safety reminders help make the holiday brighter for the children we serve,” said Maria Espinoza, Executive Director. “Our community is incredibly generous, and by keeping toy safety in mind, donors help ensure that their gifts bring joy—not risk—to our families.”
FISH’s Adopt-A-Family program helps bring holiday happiness to families facing hardship by providing children with new gifts that have been personally selected for them. Gifts can be wrapped or unwrapped and must be dropped off by December 12.
FISH extends its heartfelt thanks to all who adopt a family, donate toys, or help spread the word. Through this program, local children and their families feel celebrated during a season that can be tough for many.
