National Nonprofit Day on August 17 offers an opportunity to recognize the organizations, volunteers, donors, partners, and community members who work every day to strengthen lives and build healthier communities. At FISH of SanCap, the day celebrates the lasting impact that happens when neighbors come together to support one another.
For nearly 45 years, FISH has helped island residents and the community workforce through food programs, senior services, financial assistance, education, disaster response, and case management. While those services have evolved to meet changing community needs, the organization’s motto has stayed the same: Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
Every meal distributed, every scholarship awarded, every senior visit, and every family connected with resources reflects the combined efforts of dedicated volunteers, generous donors, local businesses, civic organizations, faith communities, grant partners, and countless individuals who believe everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.
“National Nonprofit Day is a celebration of people. Every day, our staff arrives with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to serving our neighbors. Their dedication, combined with the generosity of our volunteers, donors, partners, and supporters, allows FISH to respond when families need us most. We are grateful to everyone who believes in our mission and helps make this work possible,” said Maggi Feiner, President & CEO of FISH.
The nonprofit sector often serves as the bridge between community challenges and community solutions. At FISH, that work extends far beyond providing immediate assistance. Staff work with neighbors to identify long term solutions, connect people with available resources, and build resilience for the future.
Throughout the year, FISH collaborates with schools, healthcare providers, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and community groups to expand services and strengthen support systems across Sanibel and Captiva. Those partnerships have become especially important during hurricane recovery efforts, periods of economic uncertainty, and times when families face unexpected hardships.
“Every partnership represents a shared commitment to caring for our community. Whether it’s another nonprofit, a local business, a faith community, a civic group, or a government agency, each relationship helps us reach more neighbors and provide stronger support. None of us can meet every need alone, but together we can create lasting solutions that make our islands stronger,” said Maria Espinoza, Executive Director of FISH.
National Nonprofit Day also highlights the people whose dedication often happens behind the scenes. Volunteers stock pantry shelves, deliver meals, make reassurance calls to seniors, assist with office operations, support fundraising events, mentor students, and respond during disasters. Donors and grant partners make it possible for programs to continue serving neighbors year-round. Community partners extend the reach of services by identifying needs and connecting people with help.
“As we recognize National Nonprofit Day, we also celebrate every person who chooses to invest in their community,” continues Espinoza. “Whether someone gives their time, shares their expertise, makes a financial contribution, or simply tells a neighbor about FISH, together we are strengthening the network of support that makes our island community so special.”
This year’s observance also serves as a reminder that the work of nonprofit organizations belongs to the entire community. Every partnership, volunteer hour, donation, and referral create opportunities for neighbors to overcome challenges and move forward.
