Growing older brings new opportunities as well as new challenges. For many older adults, staying connected, maintaining independence, and having access to reliable support can make all the difference.
Through its Senior Services programs, FISH of SanCap continues to help island seniors live safely, confidently, and with dignity while remaining involved in the community.
FISH offers a variety of programs designed to meet both everyday needs and reduce social isolation. Services include Meals-by-FISH, Friendly Faces Luncheons, Smile Boxes filled with household essentials and seasonal surprises, transportation assistance, medical equipment loans, case management, visitation & reassurance calls, educational programming, and referrals to additional community resources. Each service is designed to strengthen independence while creating opportunities for connection.
“Our goal is to help seniors feel connected, supported, and able to remain independent in the community they call home,” said Erika Arnowitz, Senior Services Director at FISH. “Every touchpoint is a reminder that someone cares. We see firsthand how connections improve quality of life. That is what drives our team, and why we continue looking ahead to strengthen and expand services for seniors in the years ahead.”
A longtime FISH client recently shared how these programs have made a difference in her daily life. “During a time when I couldn’t shop or prepare meals, FISH made sure I had food, but it was the friendly volunteer delivering those meals who meant just as much. The Smile Boxes brighten my day with useful household items and thoughtful surprises. The air fryer classes through the AngelFISH Kitchen program gave me confidence to prepare healthier meals, and the Friendly Faces luncheons have become something I truly look forward to because of the friendships, conversations, and interesting guest speakers. FISH has enriched my life in more ways than I can count.”
As Lee County’s senior population continues to grow, FISH is planning for the future. The organization is exploring opportunities to strengthen and expand services over time so older adults throughout the islands continue to have access to programs that support healthy aging, independence, and social connection.
“Every conversation we have with a senior helps shape where we go next,” added Arnowitz. “We want to continue listening, learning, and building programs that respond to the needs of our community today and well into the future.”
Community support makes these programs possible. Volunteers, donors, grant partners, and local businesses all play an important role in ensuring seniors have access to services that reduce isolation, improve wellness, and help them remain independent. Support from grant partners, including The Shady Rest Foundation and CAMEO of Lee County, helps FISH continue offering programs that enrich the lives of island seniors while planning for future growth.
