FISH Helps Local Resident Recover After Serious Injury with Rent, Food, and Ongoing Support

When a sudden accident left one local worker unable to earn an income, the impact went beyond physical recovery. It created immediate financial strain, uncertainty around housing, and rising medical costs. Through timely support, FISH of Sanibel-Captiva stepped in to help stabilize the situation and keep recovery on track.

After a fall from a ladder caused multiple injuries, the individual faced a long recovery and loss of income. As a handyman, time away from the job meant no steady paycheck. Insurance did not cover key parts of treatment, which added pressure during an already difficult time.

Through the Helping Hands program, FISH provided rent assistance through grant funding provided by the Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation. This support allowed the client to focus on healing without the added risk of losing housing. FISH also helped offset out-of-pocket medical expenses, provided food during recovery, and conducted regular well checks to ensure ongoing support and connection.

“I had a serious accident that left me unable to work for a long time. The recovery was difficult, and the financial stress made it even harder. A friend suggested I reach out to FISH to see if they could help. FISH stepped in and helped with my rent, which gave me the chance to focus on getting better. They also checked in on me and made sure I had food during that time. I don’t know what I would have done without that support,” the client shared.

Nitza Lopez, FISH Social Services Director, said situations like this are common and often unexpected. “An injury or accident can change everything overnight,” said Lopez. “Someone who has always been stable can suddenly face lost income, medical bills, and uncertainty about basic needs. Our role is to step in at that moment, provide support, and help them move forward. With the right help at the right time, people can recover both physically and financially.”

FISH continues to see how quickly life events can disrupt even the most stable households. Rising costs, limited savings, and gaps in coverage leave many with few options when a crisis hits. Programs like Helping Hands are designed to address these gaps and keep individuals and families on a path toward recovery.

By covering essential needs like housing and food, and maintaining consistent contact through well checks, FISH helps ensure that clients are not facing hardship alone. The goal remains clear: meet people where they are and support them as they move forward.
