FISH of SanCap Partners with Lee County Sheriff’s Office for January Workshop on Frauds, Scams, and Identity Theft

FISH of SanCap is kicking off the new year with an important community workshop focused on one of today’s most alarming issues: frauds, scams, and identity theft. Presented in partnership with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the free program will take place on Thursday, January 22, from 11:00am–1:00pm at Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.

Cybercrime continues to skyrocket nationwide, with scammers—many operating from overseas—costing Americans billions of dollars each year. Residents across Lee County are reporting a steady rise in attempted scams, suspicious calls, and identity-theft schemes. FISH and the Sheriff’s Office hope this session gives neighbors the tools they need to stay one step ahead.

The workshop will be led by Chelsea Long, Crime Prevention Practitioner with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, who will walk participants through examples showing just how quickly criminals can access personal information and drain bank accounts. Topics include:

  • How to safeguard your identity and personal information
  • What to do if you become a victim
  • Current trends, scams, and emerging cons
  • Q&A with the Sheriff’s Office

“This is something we’re hearing about more and more—people of all ages are being targeted,” said Simon Robson, Community Outreach and Resiliency Director at FISH. “Our goal is to give residents the information they need to protect themselves and to feel confident recognizing red flags before harm is done.”

The workshop is open to everyone. RSVPs are required by January 19th. Please visit https://fraudscamidentityworkshop.rsvpify.com to reserve a spot. Snacks, water, and ample parking will be available.

Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church continues to be a supportive partner for community education, generously providing space for programs like this one. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office offers a wide range of crime-prevention programs and services to residents and local businesses. FISH is thankful to partner with them in bringing this important information to the islands.

“Our community partners make workshops like this possible,” continues Robson. “We’re thankful to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office for sharing their expertise and to Saint Michael & All Angels for welcoming us into their space. Working together like this helps keep our neighbors informed, supported, and safe.”
