FISH of Sanibel-Captiva Gears Up For Season With updated Hours and Expanded Accessibility

As the islands prepare for a busy season, FISH of SanCap (FISH) is ready to welcome residents, seasonal visitors, and volunteers with open arms—and updated hours designed to make services even more accessible.

Beginning November 1, the FISH office will be open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During those hours, neighbors can drop off donations, request services, or connect with staff about the many programs offered through FISH’s four pillars of service: Food Programs, Island-Based Education, Senior Services, and Helping Hands/Disaster Relief.

The Food Programs, led by Merari Salinas, Food Programs Manager, continue to meet the growing needs of island families. Along with the well-stocked Food Pantry, funded in part by The Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation, the team provides holiday food baskets to help families celebrate the season and offers the Youth Backpack Program, which supplies nutritious weekend meals and snacks for local children. The holiday food baskets is partially funded by a financial donation from Bank of the Islands and the youth backpack program is made possible in part through the support of Suncoast Credit Union and SanCap Kiwanis.

The Island-Based Education pillar, under the direction of Simon Robson, Community Outreach & Resiliency Director, helps to keep residents and the workforce informed through community workshops and educational sessions. New workshops are in development for the rest of this year and into 2026, covering topics like self-defense, financial safety and personal wellness.

Senior Services, directed by Erika Arnowitz, continues to grow with expanded social opportunities and community outings. Thanks to new partnerships, including with the Santiva Islanders, seniors can look forward to enhanced programs that promote connection, engagement, and fun—while addressing topics such as aging in place.

Through the Helping Hands pillar, Social Services Director Nitza Lopez provides emergency financial assistance, continuing education for adults, and scholarships for children. These programs help families get back on their feet after unexpected challenges and build toward long-term stability.

The FISH Food Pantry—a vital part of its mission—extends its Tuesday hours to better accommodate working families and individuals who cannot visit during the day.

FOOD PANTRY HOURS
Monday: 10 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Tuesday: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. (extended hours)
Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Thursday: 10 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Friday: 10 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Saturday & Sunday: Closed

“Extending our Tuesday hours gives us another way to meet people where they are,” said Maria Espinoza, FISH Executive Director. “We understand that not everyone can get to the pantry during a typical workday. This small change makes a big difference for families and individuals who rely on our programs—and it’s just one more way FISH is here to help. Thanks to our grant funders, donors, community partners, and dedicated volunteers, we can continue to grow and meet the needs of those who live and work on the islands.”

As the organization welcomes back many of its seasonal volunteers, FISH invites anyone interested in helping to reach out to MJ Hays, Volunteer & Office Coordinator, for a refresher, orientation, or to learn about new opportunities. Volunteers are the heartbeat of FISH, helping make every program possible—from stocking the pantry shelves to delivering meals and assisting at events.

From food and education to senior care and emergency assistance, FISH’s year-round efforts ensure that no one faces hardship alone. “We’re so thankful for our community’s continued generosity and support,” added Espinoza. “As we enter season, we’re reminded how much stronger we are together—neighbors helping neighbors.”
