Disaster recovery is not just about repairing homes—it’s about rebuilding lives. For many on Sanibel and Captiva, the road to recovery after Hurricane Ian was long and challenging. And just as the community was beginning to regain its footing, the hurricanes of 2024 delivered more devastating setbacks.
FISH of Sanibel and Captiva (FISH) has been a dedicated resource, offering long-term recovery support and financial assistance to those in need. Social Services Director Nitza Lopez takes the lead in helping individuals rebuild their lives and regain a sense of security.
For one local resident, the journey has been both physically and emotionally exhausting. “Hurricane Ian did more than just kick us from behind, it redefined us as a community,” he shared. “I found strength and solace in the recovery, especially working with the kind and competent volunteers and leaders at FISH. It was pretty uplifting!” But the challenges didn’t stop there. After navigating the rebuild once, he found himself in a new struggle—this time without work and with unexpected health concerns. “Something changed, however—we had lost our jobs, and we now need a set of steps and a ramp for our replacement RV. I found I had pretty severe osteoporosis, and it’s better that I don’t fall!”
That’s where FISH stepped in. Through its long-term recovery program, FISH works closely with disaster survivors to assess their needs and provide assistance where possible. Nitza Lopez, Social Services Director at FISH, meets one-on-one with families and individuals to help them navigate financial challenges, housing needs, and other essential resources.
“Each person’s struggle is unique, and at FISH, we take the time to listen, to understand, and to provide the help that makes a difference. Whether it’s emergency financial assistance, home repairs, or something essential such as stairs and a ramp, we’re here to support our neighbors every step of the way,” said Social Services Director Nitza Lopez.
Thanks to FISH’s assistance, the resident now has the safety modifications needed to remain secure in their home. “Nitza at FISH showed me that I qualified for assistance from this fine organization. They built a ramp and stairs, and I now feel safer. Thank you, FISH—you’re all like a second family to me, and we are all Sanibel strong!”
For those still struggling with hurricane recovery, FISH continues to offer help through its long-term recovery program. If you or someone you know is in need, contact FISH at (239) 472-4775 or email Nitza Lopez, nitza@fishofsancap.org, to learn more.
