Are you ready for the next hurricane? Now is the time to make sure!
As a United Way–designated Resiliency Hub, FISH of SanCap works year-round with partners across Southwest Florida to help families prepare, stay connected during storms, and recover together. Before hurricane season arrives, take 15 minutes this month to update your family emergency plan so you’re storm-ready—whether you’re on- or off-island:
- Update your emergency contacts Make sure phone numbers are current for family, trusted neighbors, and local resources—FISH of SanCap, the City of Sanibel, and Lee County Emergency Management. Keep a printed copy in a safe place. Tip: You can find key local resource phone numbers in FISH’s Hurricane Preparedness Packet, a trusted guide updated annually. Contact FISH for a copy.
- Review your insurance coverage Make sure your flood and property insurance policies are up to date. Keep copies of important documents in a safe, waterproof place you can reach quickly when needed. Store copies digitally, too.
- Plan for evacuation Think through where you would go in an evacuation is and how you’d get there. If you have pets, be sure they’re included in the plan. FISH can help families navigate these decisions before and after storms.
- Create a communication plan Consider ways to connect when cellular networks are down. Text messaging and social media apps may still work. Sign up for FISH SMS alerts to stay informed: [placeholder link]
