Supporting Families in Crisis Through the FISH OF SANCAP Helping Hands Program

When life throws the unexpected, it’s often a neighbor or a helping hand that makes all the difference. Through its Helping Hands program, FISH OF SANCAP is able to offer rent assistance—support that recently helped one hardworking island family.

A hardworking housekeeper and new mother, Jessi, recently returned to work after unpaid maternity leave. She was doing her best to regain financial stability when her husband unexpectedly lost his job. The sudden loss of income left the couple facing an impossible choice—pay the rent or fall behind on essentials for their newborn. For privacy reasons, the individual’s name has been changed.

With nowhere else to turn, Jessi confided in a coworker who told her about FISH. She visited the FISH Walk-In Center, unsure and anxious, and was immediately met with warmth, compassion, and practical support. “One of the wonderful people I met was Miss Nitza,” she shared. “She helped me every step of the way.”

FISH was able to step in with financial assistance to cover the family’s rent for the following month, giving them the breathing room they needed to regroup and avoid crisis. In addition, FISH enrolled the family in its Food Pantry program to help reduce grocery expenses.

“As most of us are these days, my husband and I were struggling. I had just returned to my job after maternity leave and was starting to get us caught up, and we hit a wall,” said Jessi. “Miss Nitza got my rent paid for the next month, which brought us more than caught up. I am beyond grateful that this is a great organization; they help many people and do an excellent job for the community!”

The Helping Hands program is one of several critical financial assistance services provided by FISH, aimed at supporting island residents during tough times. The Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation’s continued investment in this program ensures that FISH can respond quickly when families like this one face a sudden and temporary hardship.

“We are deeply grateful to the Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation for their ongoing partnership,” said Maria Espinoza, Executive Director of FISH. “Their support helps us provide urgent rent assistance that truly keeps roofs over heads and families intact. It’s a lifeline for so many.”

FISH encourages anyone who lives or works on Sanibel or Captiva and is facing a financial emergency to reach out. As the Jessi emphasized: “If you work or live on the island and need help, this is the place to go; they’re fantastic, kind people, and will go the extra mile for you.”
