FISH OF SANCAP is proud to serve the senior population of Sanibel and Captiva through a wide range of programs that enhance quality of life, encourage independence, and promote social connection. From transportation to medical appointments to the loan of medical equipment, Friendly Faces Luncheons, the Adopt-A-Senior Holiday Program and more, FISH is dedicated to meeting the unique needs of the older members of the community.
Programs for seniors are available to anyone who needs them, when they need them.
The number of seniors engaging with FISH is growing, particularly since Hurricanes Ian, Helene and Milton. Below are just a few of the meaningful senior programs offered by FISH. The organization notes that many seniors utilize other FISH programs, such as the Food Pantry, Helping Hands (emergency financial assistance), home visits and reassurance calls, mental health counseling and more.
Socialization: The Friendly Faces Luncheons, hosted monthly by FISH at the Sanibel Community House, reminds seniors that social connection matters. While the luncheon is for anyone, at any age, many seniors participate monthly. These complimentary luncheons – with food provided by the Sanibel Deli — provide an opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal, meet neighbors, and hear from engaging guest speakers. “Friendly Faces is more than just a meal,” shares Erika Arnowitz, Senior Services Director of FISH. “It’s a chance for our seniors and others to reconnect, laugh, and feel a true sense of belonging. Many of our attendees tell us it’s one of the highlights of their month.” The Friendly Faces luncheon is held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month throughout the year. Transportation: For those who have difficulties driving or who no longer drive, accessing essential appointments can be a challenge. FISH offers a reliable transportation program to ensure they get to and from their appointments safely and comfortably. “Losing the ability to drive was hard for me,” shared one program participant. “But FISH has been a lifesaver. They’ve made it possible for me to get to my doctor appointments without stress. I don’t know what I would do without them.” FISH notes their transportation program is undergoing expansion due to increased requests for services. The organization hopes to roll out an enhanced program in the first quarter of 2025.
Medical Equipment Loan Program: FISH also provides a medical equipment loan program, offering wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, and more. This vital service helps bridge the gap for those recovering from surgery or managing long-term health conditions. “I recently borrowed a wheelchair from FISH, and I can’t begin to express how helpful it has been,” said another client. “Having access to this equipment has made life so much easier. It’s comforting to know there’s a place I can turn to when I need help.”
Adopt-A-Senior Holiday Program: FISH’s commitment to seniors extends to the holidays with the Adopt-A-Senior Program, ensuring older adults experience the magic and warmth of the season. Through the generosity of donors, seniors receive thoughtful gifts tailored to their needs and preferences. One recipient expressed heartfelt gratitude, writing, “I couldn’t wait another minute to let you know that the huge bag of gifts from the generous ‘benefactor Santa’ was spectacular! I love, love everything. Slippers — so comfortable — and I love the color. All the essential oils I could want, with a state-of-the-art diffuser. My new favorite caramel candy… a gorgeous throw, and dish towels, and so much more! Please thank my Santa with fabulous taste. Everything made me so happy, and I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. Sending big love and gratitude!”
