With Thanksgiving approaching, FISH of SanCap is asking the community to help put food on the tables of island neighbors who could use a little extra support this holiday season.
The organization’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive runs now through November 24, with food basket distributions scheduled for November 23, 24 and 25. The program serves individuals and families who live or work on Sanibel and Captiva, including island workforce households.
For many households, the holidays bring additional expenses at a time when everyday costs are already stretching family budgets. FISH’s holiday food assistance helps families prepare a Thanksgiving meal at home while keeping more of their household income available for rent, utilities, transportation and other necessities.
“Thanksgiving is a time when people want to gather around the table and enjoy a meal together,” said Maria Espinoza, FISH Executive Director. “For some of the families we serve, making that happen can be difficult. Our community has always been generous about helping neighbors, and these holiday programs are another example of that support.”
FISH encourages residents and visitors to shop locally when purchasing food donations. Jerry’s Foods on Sanibel offers prepared grocery bags that make it easy for shoppers to contribute to the drive while supporting an island business.
Adding a sweet touch to the holiday meal, Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church will provide pies to accompany the Thanksgiving food baskets distributed to households.
Community members wishing to contribute to the drive are encouraged to include traditional Thanksgiving favorites such as stuffing mix, instant mashed potatoes, canned vegetables, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, canned fruit, rice, boxed macaroni and cheese, and other nonperishable holiday meal items. FISH asks that all donated food be unopened and within its expiration date.
Donations may be dropped off at FISH, 2422 Periwinkle Way, or Bank of the Islands, 1699 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, throughout the collection period. Additional collection locations may be announced through FISH’s social media channels.
Those who prefer to make a financial contribution can donate in person at FISH or through the organization’s website at fishofsancap.org/donation-form/. Donors should enter “HOLIDAY” in the dedication field to direct their contribution toward seasonal assistance.
Thanksgiving food baskets will be distributed November 23 and 24, with a final distribution opportunity on November 25 until noon. The distribution location will be announced as the holiday approaches.
Individuals and families interested in receiving a Thanksgiving food basket must complete a brief interest form at https://FISHholiday.rsvpify.com or https://fishholidaysp.rsvpify.com/ for the Spanish version. Assistance is available to eligible households with a connection to Sanibel or Captiva through residency or employment.
Volunteers will be needed to help with food collection, sorting, basket preparation and distribution. Individuals and groups interested in lending a hand can view available opportunities through POINT at pointapp.org/orgs/2509 or contact FISH at mj@fishofsancap.org.
“Every bag of groceries, financial contribution and volunteer hour helps us reach another household,” Espinoza added. “We are grateful to the local businesses, community partners, donors and volunteers who help make Thanksgiving a little easier for our neighbors.”
