FISH of Sanibel-Captiva will host a Social Media and Online Security workshop on Thursday, June 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Fellowship Hall at The Community Church, located at 1740 Periwinkle Way on Sanibel.
Presented by Chelsea Long of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit, the workshop will focus on staying safe online in a world where scams, fake websites, and online fraud continue to grow.
Technology has become part of daily life. The workshop will help participants better understand current online risks and how to protect personal information while continuing to safely connect with family, friends, and the community online. Topics will include:
- How to safeguard identity and personal information
- What to do if someone becomes a victim
- Current online trends impacting the public
- Tips for safer use of social media and internet
FISH encourages community members of all ages to attend, especially older adults, caregivers, and individuals who may feel uncertain about navigating online platforms safely.
“Unfortunately, social media and fake websites continue to target people every day, especially seniors,” said Simon Robson Community Outreach and Resiliency Director at FISH. “This workshop gives people information they can actually use. The more informed our community is, the better prepared they are to protect themselves and those around them.”
Robson notes the workshop is part of a larger effort to help the community stay informed and prepared in an increasingly digital world. “People are receiving scam website links and social media messages every single day,” Robson continues. “Many look legitimate. This workshop helps people slow down, recognize warning signs, and know what steps to take before personal information or finances are compromised. Even a few simple changes can make a big difference.”
Light refreshments will be provided and ample parking is available.
